Volunteer Opportunities

Advocacy: Work with state legislators, state arts organizations and local officials to increase awareness of cultural organizations and art education to secure funding each year for these entities and projects.  Emphasize the economic value of the arts as well as the cultural value.  Volunteer opportunities include coordinating CSOL® projects to promote arts in area schools, coordinate member trip to Art’s Day in Columbia, etc.

Audience Development: Provide support for the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, Inc., (CSO) to implement strategies to increase ticket sales of the CSO and to reach new subscribers. Volunteer needs include annual planning with CSO, scheduling and operation of the Instrument Petting Zoo (IPZ), recruitment of ushers to serve at the youth concerts and in any other concerts where volunteer ushers are needed.

Communications:  Creation and distribution of marketing and advertising collateral in print and electronically for all projects and special events.  Volunteer opportunities include writing, proofreading and distribution of press releases, photography, creating invitations, rack cards and marketing materials, as well as project booklets where needed.  The newsletter, Keynotes, is included in the communications committee.

Education/Scholarships: The CSOL® awards college scholarships to high school seniors who plan to major in music, matching grants to members of the Charleston Symphony Youth Orchestra and summer scholarships to young musicians and to CSO musicians. Volunteer opportunities include participation in the process of interviewing, auditioning and awarding scholarships.

Housing and Transportation for Visiting Musicians:  Coordinate or provide accommodations and/or transportation for out of town musicians on rehearsal and concert days when they are playing with the CSO.

Member Events: Provide member hospitality, musician hospitality and special member program events for current and new members.  Volunteer opportunities include coordinating and/or participating in member coffees, teas, feeding the musicians and special member events.

Membership: Responsible for the recruitment and orientation of members, the administration of member applications and records, and the development of ongoing member engagement. Volunteer opportunities include staffing the welcome table at meetings and teas, producing the membership directory, collecting dues and maintaining the member database. All members are encouraged to recruit new members.

Merchandising:  Organize, develop and implement a marketing plan to promote CSOL® products to the public. Volunteer opportunities include identifying outlet sources, supplying sources with merchandise, selling CSOL® products at various venues.

Newsletter:  Publish 5-6 bimonthly newsletters a year for distribution to CSOL® membership. Volunteer opportunities include writing, editing, proofreading, photography and archiving.

Sponsorship: Establish a plan for sponsorship and revenue opportunities for the League and for fundraising projects. Volunteer opportunities include identifying and securing sponsors, administration, writing letters of appreciation and publicizing sponsors’ names, etc.

Projects/Special Events:  Coordinate or contribute time to fund raising events.

Tour of Homes (TOH): Held in November on one or two of Charleston’s neighboring islands.  Volunteer needs include docents, ticket sales, refreshments, program booklet, traffic management, etc.

Gala: An annual celebration of the opening CSO concert season.  Volunteer needs include invitations, auction items, ticket sales, sponsorship, check-in/check-out, menu, decorations, etc.

Car Sponsorship:  A thousand raffle tickets are sold throughout the year at the Tour of Homes, Designer Showhouse, online and at other events. Volunteer needs are working with dealership, ticket sales, getting car to various events and tracking sales, etc.

Golf Tournament:  Assist in finding and contracting with a suitable golf course, obtain sponsors, assist with marketing, silent auction, register golfers and/or volunteer the day of the event.

Designer Showhouse (DSH): The largest and longest fundraiser, the DSH is a showhouse open mid-March through mid-April.  Volunteers are needed for designer sales, café, boutique, docents, ticket sales, bare boards party, preview party, etc. Active Members and Active Couple Members are required to contribute 2 days (four shifts) at the DSH. All members are encouraged to participate.  

Pursuit of the Podium (POP): A competition among well-known personalities to win an opportunity to conduct the CSO at a concert.  Volunteer opportunities include identifying and selecting candidates, creating marketing materials, administration, etc.

Revels:  Plan and implement and/or host a series of fun member events such as parties, musical performances, activities or excursions that include members and guests.  Volunteer opportunities include planning and sponsoring, etc.  Summer planning is required.

Regular membership requires attendance at one general meeting/coffee and service on at least two of the committee/projects, one of those being two days of service (four 3-hour shifts) at the Designer Showhouse.  All members are encouraged to participate in League activities.

The CSOL® membership year begins July 1 and ends June 30 of the following year.
