2022-2023 Scholarships

The Charleston Symphony Orchestra League supports the Charleston Symphony Orchestra in its mission to provide educational opportunities for the children and youth of our community as well as the musicians of the CSO.

The following annual scholarships are funded through the ongoing fundraising efforts of the CSOL which sets aside $30,000 a year for this purpose. CSOL members may designate donations for this purpose when they renew membership.


College Scholarships – $2,000 for the first year of study

Offered to: Graduating high school seniors in Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester Counties who plan to major in music performance, composition, conducting, music therapy or music education in college.

Requirements: Application, letters of recommendation, and a successful audition.

Number offered: Up to five scholarships




Matching Grant Awards – $250 per semester ($500 total), matched by the parent or guardian, for private music study.

Offered to: Members of the Charleston Symphony Youth Orchestra/Strings

Requirements: CSYO/S member, application, and successful audition.

Number offered: Up to five scholarships

(In addition, $1,000 is administered in collaboration with the CSYO to support tuition for students who audition successfully for the CSYO but are in financial need.)




Summer Study Awards – of varying amounts up to $1,000 to fund summer camps and private lessons during the summer

Offered to: Tri-county music students, age 10 through 11th grade

Requirements: Application, involvement in current musical study, successful audition, and proof of summer study plans, either to attend a summer music camp or to take private lessons in the summer.

Number offered: As funds allow and in varying amounts.





Charleston Symphony Orchestra Musician Summer Study Scholarships

The CSOL provides summer study scholarships in varying amounts each year to members of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra to support their creative projects, participation in music festivals and professional development.


The following special funds supported by donations are also managed by the CSOL to support youth musicians.

David and Karen Stahl College Scholarship – $2,500 is awarded annually to the college scholarship applicant with the highest qualifying audition score.

Ruth and Barry Goldsmith Scholarship – $500 is awarded annually to the summer study scholarship applicant with the highest qualifying audition score who is attending a summer camp which costs more than $1,000.

Johanna Bowen Scholarship Fund – is awarded as needed to students who have successfully auditioned with the CSOL or the CSYO to support private lessons, summer camp or other educational experiences.

Donna Reyburn Scholarship for Music Lessons – $540 for two semesters of private lessons are awarded in collaboration with the conductor of the CSYO and the Education Coordinator of the CSO as needs-based scholarships for members of the Charleston Symphony Youth Orchestra who cannot afford private lessons.
