News from our scholarship winners

Micah McLaurin, Summer Study Scholarship winner, has just returned from Germany, where he placed 2nd in the 2010 Ettlingen International Piano Competition for Young Artists.

He was also the co-winner of the 2010 Southeastern Piano Festival Arthur Fraser Concerto Competition in Columbia, SC - he will be performing with the South Carolina Philharmonic in the spring.

You can hear Micah perform:

  • Sunday, Sept. 12, 3:00 p.m., at a 45-min. concert at Franke at Seaside Retirement Community in Mt. Pleasant.

  • Saturday, October 9, at the Charleston Place Hotel for our CSOL Gala.

Nikki Hillis, Summer Study Award winner, plays trombone for YoLow.  Her mother writes that “she really benefited from the scholarship she received this year.  She attended Furman University Band and Orchestra Summer Camp, June 13-18th, competing in the solo competition, and placing in the top ten, which allowed her to perform in the Honors Concert on June 16th.  She played Morceau Symphonique by Guilmant.  She placed first chair in the two top performing groups, the Wind Symphony, and the Symphony Orchestra. Because of her first chair placement, she was also placed in the brass ensemble, and performed on June 17th in the small ensemble program.  She also took private lessons during the week from the professor of trombone at Furman University, Dr. Mark Britt.  At the conclusion of camp, she was awarded the Dan Ellis Outstanding Musicianship Award by Dr. Leslie Hicken, director of the bands at Furman.  The many rehearsals and lessons throughout the camp week really helped her to grow musically.  It was a wonderful experience and opportunity.”

Many thanks, Deborah Hillis

Liz Benson:  I wanted to thank the CSOL for the summer study program of which my daughter was the beneficiary.  She studied with Dr. Lindley all summer and made great progress. This would not have been possible without your support and we are very grateful.

Liz is now the lead violin in a local girls’ band (Celtic Lassies w/ Dr. Thomas), she plays in the Chamber Orchestra at Wando and is in the Marching Band.   She is taking AP classes this year and if she had more time in the day she would love to audition for the district orchestras and YOLOW.

Thank you again for this opportunity and support.
