How we started...
The Charleston Symphony Orchestra League, Inc. (CSOL®) is a multi-talented group of dedicated volunteers whose purpose is to support the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. We have done this for 50 years through music education programs, audience development, and a number of fundraising projects.
In 1964, a small group of women known as the “Women’s Association,” began soliciting funds for the symphony. Since 1983, when the name was changed to the CSOL®, this group has grown to become a diverse membership of more than 300 men and women who have provided an incredible amount of support for the Charleston Symphony Orchestra.
League members share their talents and expertise by contributing thousands of hours in planning and producing a wide variety of special projects. They include our annual "Gala", festive “Revels” parties, car sponsorships, plus house tours, including the League’s annual “Symphony Designer Showhouse,” Swing for the Symphony golf tournament, and the promotion of our acclaimed cookbook, Music, Menus and Magnolias.
The CSOL® actively supports music education and funding for the arts, annually awarding: the $2,500 David and Karen Stahl Scholarship and $2,000 Student Scholarships to high school seniors who plan to major in music; $250 Matching Grant Awards to members of the Charleston Symphony Youth Orchestra (CSYO); Summer Study Awards to talented Lowcountry music students; and Professional Scholarships available to members of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra for advanced study.
Our Arts Advocacy Committee works with state arts advocates to enhance the study of arts in our local schools, and with government officials to promote the support of fine arts throughout the state. During the concert season, League members also serve as ushers, provide refreshments for CSO musicians, and housing for guest musicians.
